read something interesting over the weekend.

in 1974 a radio telescope called arecibo sent a signal out in the direction of a cluster of stars far far away. it contained information on the human race. these stars were 25000 light years away, so for our signal to reach them, it would take 25000 years and another 25000 years for a reply. so the sent signal was more a demonstration of human technological achievement than a real attempt to communicate with aliens.

the message sent was in the format of binary code. for those unfamiliar with binary, it's all the 10010011000101001 things la. (i can never create a binary series im satisfied with, its either too many zeroes or ones.)
the numbers that we use (1, 2, 3, 4...26) is in base 10. dasmean count to nine then carry 1 into the 10's column and count again in the units column, till we reach 99. then we have to carry 1 into the 100's column then start back.
binary is in base 2. so dasmean you start with 0, 1, and then carry 1 into the 10's column. so running binary would be 0, 1, 10, 11, 100, 101, 111, 1000, 1001...26.

the binary code had 1679 digits; now this was interesting, why 1679 was picked. 1679 is a multiple of 2 prime numbers, 73 and 23. so the alien picking the signal up can only arrange the long code by 73 rows and 23 columns or the other way round. if arranged by 73 rows and 23 columns, this matrix can be seen:

and then if you colour in the 1s and leave the 0s as blank, you'll see a little graphic.

the different colours are the different segments of the code.
reading from right to left, top to bottom, it shows the following:

the numbers 1-10;
the atomic numbers of the elements hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus, components in DNA;
the formulas for the sugars and bases in the nucleotides of DNA;
the number of nucleotides in DNA;
a graphic of the double helix structure of DNA;
a graphic figure of a man and the height of an average man;
the human population of earth;
a graphic of the solar system;
a graphic of the arecibo radio telescope and the diameter of the transmitting antenna dish;

then, in 2001, a crop circle containing a modified form of the code was formed in some field somewhere.

the change that struck me the most was the representation of the crop circle. in 2000, a crop circle was formed in the same field. it is as if the aliens are replying the signal that was never meant to be received. in the original code, it was a graphic representation of the arecibo space telescope, symbolising our efforts to communicate. the whole binary code thing is like sending a message up to inform the aliens of our existence, while in their reply, it's a crop circle of a crop circle.

in the same format we provided the height of an average man, they provided the height of an average alien or "grey" - a little above 1m. there's something interesting paddy told me about human evolution the other day. im not really sure of the details but it vaguely goes like this. inside our skulls is a bone which looks shaped like a butterfly's wings. it holds the brain in the upper half of our skull. they found the same bone in primates, except that the bone was tilted more and ours was more horizontal, giving a human skull more brain space. it is said that as time goes along, the human "butterfly" bone will tilt more and more in the other direction giving more and more brain space as time goes along, eventually pushing our foreheads outwards.

as the signal was sent out in the direction of a group of stars so far out, the signal provided information on our solar system. it was a graphic representation of the sun, and the then nine planets (pluto has been declassified as a planet). the signal had the dot representing the earth highlighted showing we lived on earth. in the reply however, mars, jupiter and saturn were highlighted together with earth. this could mean that they were residing on these four planets, and again why we have yet to find life on those planets is that they are of the 4th dimension.

After what seemed like forever, my brief stint in Canada's over. Time to return to Singapore, time to consolidate my thoughts.
I learnt a lot during my time here. Good stuff, and bad stuff. However, i loved it all. I loved every single fucking memory and experience.

every cigarette burns out, every bottle of coke empties.

so ends my 2 month stint at srjc. i dont even know why it's called the "first 3 months". i had opted for srjc only because shah had a house next to the school, and in that house lay a ps2. one would assume that a lazy, 130kg thirty-pointer would stay at home and not get a job. he didnt. he made it to acjc. aka he wouldnt be at home to play with me and i dont like playing winning eleven with his maid because she happens to be very good at it.

so i went to school.

first week was hell for me. i know, it's orientation and orientation is the mostest funnestest week of junior college life. but you are not in srjc, and even if you are, you are not me. it kind of reminded me of npcc adventure training camps where we, the students of anglo-chinese school (independent), would learn how to pronounce the names of chinese-speaking folk and the names of the schools which they were from (amongst other important survival skills). loyang. greenwitch. northbrooks. broadrick. telok kurau. changkat changi. acs guys can say "fitzgerald" without getting our tongues fucked as much. but atc only lasted 3 days. and atc had caleb. CALEB. an integral part of my life, pulling me through the toughest of times, i.e adventure training camp. caleb was missing from srjc. i wanted him so bad to be part of school. we had dreams which were never given a chance to be fulfilled. one of those dreams was to rule the schooling world. we wanted to be the mostest famousest duo in the under-16 catagory. like bonnie and clyde. seth and ryan. jekyll and hyde. matt damon and ben affleck. CALEB AND BEN. BEN AND CALEB. which ever way you please, one never came without the other.

ok ok fuck back to srjc.

srjc. the school lacked caleb. not so much caleb, but companionship. for me, friends are important. (okay, who doesnt find friends imortant.) TO ME, FRIENDS ARE FUCKING IMPORTANT. i cant live a day without eating ice. or drinking cold water. the same way i cant live without friends.

and that was missing.

my friends had all gone to acjc, even the thirty-pointers. i mixed with the sportsmen in acs, so even with 20 points (or 30) they could still go to acjc. everyday of the orientation week i had wished for "my hell to end tomorrow". that i could wake up the next day and these couple of months (yes, a couple of being 2 months, NOT THREE.) are over, and i am happily sitting in the void deck of the acjc canteen basking in the glory of my six-point-olevel score, talking to girls. you see, to me i was merely "on loan" (this is what football manager does to you) from acjc. that was where i belong, with all my friends and the culture remaining unaltered from acs. but if i could have my way with everything in life, i would be dating kate hudson. not that there is anything wrong with jacq, but you catch my drift. then something happened during the mass dance practice. a girl that bore an uncanny resemblance to "ying han" (this hot hot hot girl val brought into the hotel on new year's eve) caught my eye. during the dance. there is a step in that dance which, and i quote from jonathan, "involved a sensual shifting of shoulders". ORGAS, MAN, i first thought. and second thought. and third thought. you see, we had to go over the steps a few times. and at the end of day 3 i asked for her number. "skew me, miss, can i have your number for, erm, emergencies?"

elke got me through the first few weeks, giving me companionship during lectures, turorials, breaks. UNTIL SHE FOUND BETTER COMPANIONSHIP IN NELLIE AND KASSANDRA AND FORMED THE NELKASS ALLIANCE. she stopped hanging out with me. but i was clever. am clever. i knew ccas would get let me make new friends. so i signed up for soccer, mcs, and dance.

on the day of the cca recruitment drive the dance team put up a performance. now this dance would beat the living daylights out of the mass dance, having more than a sensual shifting of shoulders. me and haziq got ring-side tickets and watched the dance from like 2cm away. and all that we were looking at was this girl in lime green. lets call her "salt" so as to protect her (and me). then there was the "booth girl". the way she sat at the booth just blew us away. i had to sign up. soon i would be in dance. one of the only few guys outnumbered by hot girls in hot tights and tank tops. the star on stage when we perform. the- THEN THERE HAD TO BE THE BLOODY AUDITIONS. so no dance for me.

soccer. 60 people at the trails, 4 chosen to train the next day. all i remembered from the try outs was that i slid in hard on yook kin, causing the towering terror of jupiter to crash onto the barren field of srjc. and no, i wasnt chosen. good thing mcs didnt require an audition. i do not even have the smallest drop of malay blood in me. NOT EVEN. and before i knew it i was performing for the chinese new year dikir barat performance. the dikir boys gave me the companionship in school that elke took away. they were like chiu in 4.5, caleb in npcc, yuan loong in softball. they were a float thrown into the sea of loneliness to save a drowning me. AIZAT, OMAR, ZAINI, MURSH, IZMAL, HAZZELY. and ya the rest. be it LEPAK in the canteen, ESAP in the prayer room, or TEPOH outside lt5, it was pure fun. even at times when i understood only the "aku"s and the "kamu"s in the sentence, it seemed like i got the joke too. i learned more than malay and dikir moves from aizat and co. their outlook on life is different; it was sort of an eye-opener. i started to love srjc. but plans change. i was poly-bound, and there was very little chance of turning back. even the 12 points didnt sway me off-course. and whenever ppl ask me where im headed, i tell them acjc to avoid the unwanted "WHY?"s and the "WITH 12 POINTS?!"s i get when i tell them im going to temasek poly. and to those whom i disclose my real choice of institution to i spare them the details of what a "diploma in visual communications" is and just say "oh, studying art liddat, lah." while wildly gesturing of what resembles me drawing. ya back to srjc.

so my sr life can be divided into 3 timezones.
the first few weeks: the guy always seen with elke.
the next few weeks: the chinese guy in mcs.
the last few weeks: the guy with jacq.

jacq. jacqueline. jacqueline chan saw ree. saw ree that once again, i cant remember your chinese name.

she is actually the highlight of srjc. not elke, not that sliding tackle, not mcs. she makes me wanna come to school everyday. she makes me wanna wait till "six-something" for sheila to call it a day. she makes me wanna stay up at 4am to post this. she makes me wanna make more trips to tanah merah in a week than i had in my entire life. she makes me wanna thank shah for getting 30 points. she makes me wanna wear a band of strings around my wrist for weeks and not taking it out, often getting mistaken for obtaining than from a temple. she makes me wanna feel things a have never felt before, like a connection so strong.

Al-Zarqawi beheaded Armstrong, and the militants on Monday posted a gruesome video of the 52-year-old man's death.

The new posting followed the passing of the militants' 24-hour deadline for the release of all Iraqi women from U.S. custody, and after anguished relatives in the United States and Britain begged for the lives of Bigley, 62, and Hensley, who would have marked his 49th birthday Wednesday.

``The nation's zealous sons slaughtered the second American hostage after the end of the deadline,'' the statement said. It was signed with the pseudonym Abu Maysara al-Iraqi, the name usually used on statements from al-Zarqawi's group.

The brief statement did not give the name of the hostage killed. It promised video proof soon.

Tawhid and Jihad - Arabic for ``Monotheism and Holy War'' - has claimed responsibility for killing at least seven hostages, including another American, Nicholas Berg, who was abducted in April. The group has also said it is behind a number of bombings and gun attacks.

This week's back-to-back killings and the threat of more, however, represented a heightened level of psychological warfare in al-Zarqawi's campaign of terror.

A host of militant groups have used kidnappings and bombings as their signature weapons in a blood-soaked campaign to undermine interim Prime Minister Ayad Allawi's government and force the United States and its allies out of Iraq.

A car bomb wounded four U.S. soldiers Tuesday on the road to Baghdad's airport, underscoring the inability of American forces to control key areas of the capital. West of the capital, two U.S. Marines were killed in separate attacks, the military said Tuesday.

The new posting came hours after President Bush defended his decision to invade Iraq, telling a subdued U.N. General Assembly session that the war launched in 2003 without U.N. approval delivered the Iraqi people from ``an outlawed dictator.''

Bush told Allawi, ``We will not allow these thugs and terrorists to decide your fate and to decide our fate. ``

Allawi said: ``The barbaric action of yesterday is really unbelievable.''

Al-Zarqawi, standing alongside four other masked militants clad in black, personally cut off Armstrong's head, the CIA confirmed after analyzing his voice on the footage.

Earlier Tuesday, Hensley's family in Georgia appealed to his captors to open lines of communication with them and spare his life.

``He was just there doing a service for the Iraqi people - including even his captors,'' Hensley's wife, Pati, told CNN. ``I would plead with them to please realize this man does not deserve this fate.''

Bigley's family echoed her pleas.

``We are begging you not to kill them,'' said Bigley's brother, Philip. ``We are begging you to find a solution, a compromise, that will help to save two lives, innocent lives.''

Armstrong's body was discovered Monday only blocks from where he lived, officials and witnesses said.

In a video posted Saturday, Tawhid and Jihad had threatened to kill the three men unless Iraqi women were released from two U.S.-controlled prisons, Abu Ghraib and Umm Qasr.

Abu Ghraib is the prison where American soldiers were photographed sexually humiliating male prisoners, raising fears about the safety of women detainees.

In Monday's video, al-Zarqawi announced that Tawhid and Jihad was taking revenge for female Iraqi prisoners and called Bush ``a dog.''

The U.S. military says women are not held at either facility but has acknowledged it is holding two female ``security prisoners'' elsewhere. They are Dr. Rihab Rashid Taha, a scientist who became known as ``Dr. Germ'' for helping Iraq make weapons out of anthrax, and Huda Salih Mahdi Ammash, a biotech researcher known as ``Mrs. Anthrax.''

In London, Bigley's son urged British Prime Minister Tony Blair to meet the captors' demands.

``I ask Tony Blair personally to consider the amount of bloodshed already suffered,'' Craig Bigley said in a videotaped statement. ``Please meet the demands and release my father - two women for two men. ... Only you can save him now.''

Blair called the family Tuesday afternoon, but a British Foreign Office spokesman said the government would not give in to the kidnappers.

Foreign Office official Dean McLoughlin later went on Arab television station Al-Arabiya to say ``not even one'' female prisoner was under Britain's control.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan condemned the taking and killing of hostages in Iraq. But he also said Iraqi prisoners had been disgracefully abused, an implicit criticism of the U.S. treatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib.

``No one is above the law,'' Annan said. ``Again and again, we see fundamental laws shamelessly disregarded - those that ordain respect for innocent life, for civilians, for the vulnerable - especially children.''

Through their sorrow, Armstrong's family extended prayers to relatives of other hostages. Rick Gamber, Armstrong's cousin, told NBC's ``Today Show'' that the family doesn't want revenge.

``Our family feels a great deal of grief,'' he said. ``We hope the criminals are brought to justice, but we certainly don't want people to overreact and do something foolish.''

Also Tuesday, the Turkish VINSAN construction company announced it was bowing to the demands of militants and halting operations in Iraq in a bid to save the lives of 10 kidnapped Turkish employees.

Another Turkish hostage, seized Aug. 5, was released after his company, Atahan Lojistik International, withdrew from Iraq, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. Tahsin Top's abductors had also demanded a $45,000 ransom. It was not clear if money was paid.

But Turkish state TRT television reported the body of another Turk, identified as Akar Besir, was found early Tuesday near the northern city of Mosul. The station said Besir was a driver for a firm working for the U.S. military and was kidnapped Saturday.

More than 130 foreigners have been kidnapped here, and at least 27 of them have been killed. Many more Iraqis have also been seized in the chaos since Saddam Hussein was ousted last year, in many cases for ransom.
